Vincennes University Opens Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Logistics
Vincennes University will offer nine courses in its newest facility this fall. The Gibson County Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Logistics will include classes on economics, math and Earth science. The $12 million center is near several area manufacturers who plan to benefit from worker training options at the facility located on U.S. 41 near the Interstate 64 intersection.
Initially, course offerings will include Economics, Sociology, Speech, Earth Science, two levels of math, two levels of English, and Reading. Day classes will meet twice a week and evening classes will meet once per week in most cases. Additional courses focusing on community needs and interests are being added regularly.
These initial courses will grow in number and diversity as VU continues to respond to the needs of area residents and employers, said Dr. Ronald Davis, VU provost and vice president of Instructional Services. VU is delighted to introduce its new facility, courses, and programs to Gibson County. This is a partnership that has been carefully developed to help local residents and to boost area economic development.
The Gibson County Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Logistics is VUs newest facility. It will meet the needs of students and area workers who wish to pursue manufacturing and logistics degree programs as well as general education. It will also serve existing workers who seek to expand their skills to remain competitive. Full programming at the facility is planned for introduction in January 2012.
The $12 million facility is located adjacent to many major manufacturers that will directly benefit from the training offered there. The State of Indiana and contributions of business and industry partners helped VU create the 57,342 square-foot facility.
We are in close communication with area employers concerning their training needs, and we will offer credit and non-credit training that meets those needs. Our emphasis, as the facility's name implies, will be training in advanced manufacturing and logistics, said David Tucker, vice president of Workforce Development/Community Services at VU.
The Gibson County Center is targeted to employers, employees, and prospective students within southwestern Indianas industrial corridor.
The Centers programming will be designed for growing career fields such as 21st century logistics and distribution, computer-integrated manufacturing, injection molding/tool and die, robotics, welding, electronics, industrial maintenance, and mining technology. The facility will feature licensed, certified faculty and staff who have significant experience both within the industry and in instruction. New and revised curricula will reinforce the soft skills needed by
Indianas 21st century technician, including problem solving, communications, ethics, leadership, teamwork, management, organization, and financial planning.
The new Center will support current and future industry and economic growth, transform the skill sets of students and employees, and make lasting and significant impacts on Hoosier workforce development. The Gibson County Center will be flexible and adaptive to truly meet the needs of Indianas manufacturing and technical workforce, Tucker said.
